My Grocery Store Comparison

I have a $100 weekly grocery budget for my husband and I. I am typically able to keep our weekly grocery trip at $100 or just a bit below but I always have to remove one or time “unnecessary items” to make this happen. I have had a few people tell me to start shopping at Walmart because the prices are so cheap. We currently shop at Fred Meyers through Click List. So this week I decided to do a little research to see if Walmart is really better. Here are my findings:

I used both Walmarts and Fred Meyers online shopping apps. Below is my shopping list. For each item I selected the same size (unless otherwise stated) and the same brand when possible.

As you can see there is a price difference and both prices are over my budget. I did a second calculation where I took the least expensive option from each store and that came out to be $111.28 which is still over budget. And when you think about having to drive between stores that uses gas as well and isn’t necessarily saving any money.

After my research here is what I did/learned:

  1. I will keep shopping at Fred Meyer.
Reason #1 we get gas points every time we shop. We typically get anywhere from $.10-$.40 off per gallon. Those savings are really important to us because we both currently drive to another town for work.
Reason #2 the meat brand options are so much better. I do not buy Foster Farms or Tyson brand and that was all my Walmart had. I prefer the Simple Truth brand from Fred Meyers.
Reason #3 we get money rebates every 3 or 4 months that are usually about $20.
  2. Fred Meyer has really great coupons for their online pick up program. I am usually about to use enough coupons to cover the cost of the pick up cost and then some.
  3. I think I will start to buy some bulk items at Walmart. The sparkling water was a steal in my opinion. I would love to by like 3 or 4 cases of that and stock up.

AND now here is what I actually bought this week:

To get under budget without removing too much here is what I did:
1. I removed the shrimp. It was alot of money and we really didn’t need it.
2. I got the tortillas on sale. It was a 2 for $5 deal but I only got one. You can still get the sale price on items like this even if just buy one. I think you have to have the “store card” in order to do this.
3. I got a coupon for the chicken breast. Dolla off y’all!
4. I bought the carrots from the bulk bin instead of prepackaged.
5. I got a smaller container of the blackberries. These are for my husband so we don’t need a massive amount.
6. I changed the bread brand and I was able to get a coupon so that I got two loafs for $5.
7. I changed the apple brand from Honeycrisp to a brand called Jazz. Obvi Honeycrisp is the best but the Jazz was a much better deal this week.
8. I changed the sparkling water brand and amount. Like I said I would like to get it in bulk from Walmart. Maybe next week!

I think these are some practical and #real tips for saving on a grocery bill. I pretty much got everything I still wanted (minus the shrimp) and I was still under budget. And now I know I am getting the best overall deal.

Hair Hack: My Experience with a Cosmetology School Haircut

Ladies, it is expensive to keep your hair looking good! My average cost for a hair cut in Jersey City has been a minimum of $90. I found that no matter where to for a cut, it always ends up looking the exact same. As I was dragging my feet last month on scheduling yet another expensive haircut, I decided to look into getting a haircut at a cosmetology school.

After looking at reviews for different schools, I decided on the Aveda Institute New York. The student hair cuts in New York start at $30, a savings of $60! I read some of the yelp reviews, and although some of them were pretty bad, I figured how bad can they mess up my hair? I called the school and they were able to fit me in for an appointment after work.

Upon arrival, I was promptly greeted by my hairdresser, a cute little 19 year old who had moved to NYC from Pennsylvania just for the program. He had started a few months prior, so he was not in the more advanced group. We had an initial consultation where I told him I was looking for a change and he listened to what I was looking for very intently. Then his supervisor came over and he told her what I wanted and she confirmed with me that it was correct. We then went over to the hair washing stations where my hairdresser proceeded to spray himself with a bunch of water (lolz). He started cutting my hair and right then the fire alarm started going off. The building’s fire alarm system was being tested that night so it proceeded to go off every five minutes for the next hour and a half. This was (understandably) very nerve-wracking for my new hairdresser but he did a great job throughout it all!

After each stage of the haircut, his supervisor needed to check off on his progress, which sometimes took a while because there were other students she was supervising. I was glad to have the supervisor’s oversight, she was clearly very experienced and a good instructor. The cut took 2 hours in total, but I am thrilled with the results!

If you have the time and do not want to spend the money on a traditional haircut, I definitely recommend checking out your local cosmetology school. I also learned that Aveda provides facial services starting at $10, so the next time I go back for a haircut, I will be adding that on as well.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Work Outfits Week of 4/29

This week I went for less is more. I listened to a styling webinar years ago and a tip from it for always looking “polished” was to have three pieces (pants, top, jacket). I have always tried to implement this but since I wear a lab coat everyday for most of the day it has become too many layers and I get hot. So this week I went for two items and nice shoes (I wore my brown booties most of the days. This really simplified my morning styling session. Also the pants I’m wearing Wednesday-Friday are from Target and they are $25! I was shocked when I tired them on as I love premium denim and I don’t really buy anything else but I will be getting these in every single color very soon. I have a curvy behind which is why I usually get premium denim (the fit is great) but these pants from Target fit just as good!

This week was a combination of days that we had clients in and days that my boss was out of the office and we had no clients in. It was also my first week with my new hair cut (check out the blog on my hair cut experience HERE), which added polish to each of my outfits. I enjoyed experimenting with curling it on Friday and think I will do it more often.
