Emily Summer Bucket List: Take a Trip

We took a trip to the coast! We celebrated our 5 year anniversary this August and we wanted a special way to mark the occasion. We booked an ocean view AirBnb in Lincoln City in August. I will start by saying we will never go in August again! Everywhere we went was so crowded AND the Airbnb was really expensive. We had a much nicer time when we went last year in September.

Day 1 – Travel Day. We departed at 1pm hoping to have everyone sleep in the car for nap time. Which 2 out of 3 children did! We had a really nice drive there. We stopped once at a rest stop to stretch our legs and feed Gal. I packed Uncrustables and chips for everyone else that we ate while driving. We also brought a few DVDs that I checked out from the library before we left. Upon arrival we unpacked and got settled. We got pizza for dinner the first night from Tye Dye Pie. I went to pick it up and it wasn’t ready and the pizza place was 100 degrees inside (possibly more. Idk it was so freaking hot.) Then the cook and cashier were having a fight the whole time which was super awkward to listen to. After dinner we intended to go to the beach and watch the sunset but it was crazy windy and none of us had sweaters or pants on (Gal was the most unhappy with the situation!)

Day 2 – Beach Day. We ate sugar cereal (beach tradition!) and pizza for breakfast then went to the beach. The boys loved it and had the best time. Gal wasn’t impressed and I spent most of my time trying to make her comfortable. I finally put her in the baby carrier and wrapped blankets around us which settled her down. After the beach we came back for lunch which was more pizza. (we ordered way too much the first night. Which my husband said it was too much but I didn’t listen.) We then had nap time. After that we thought it would be fun to “go out”. It was not fun folks! First we tired to go to the outlet mall which was packed. But we had to park anyway for a diaper change. Then we thought “oh let’s go to a restaurant!” We drove by Pelican Brewing and the parking lot was also full and there was a steady flowing of people going in but not coming out. Then we thought “well surely Mo’s isn’t busy.” What fools! The line was 30 people deep. And that was only what we could see from the outside. We finally decided to go to the worlds smallest grocery store. It was then that Bud knocked a glass jar of jelly off the shelf. We’d all hit our limit and I said “we never should have gone out in public!!” I made the smart choice to grab a bottle of wine at checkout. We got stuck in traffic somehow on the way back. Once home we got DoorDash take out and played in the side yard our Airbnb had.

Day 3 – More Beach Time. After Gal hating the beach the day before we decided that my husband would take the boys to the beach solo and I’d stay back with Gal at the Airbnb. This was a big reason I wanted a house as close to ocean view as we could get. I figured I’d be staying at the house a lot with Gal and it gave us quicker beach access for fast beach trips. My husband did great with the boys and said Pal made friends with a boy a few years older than him and that family helped him manage the boys which I thought was so sweet! I had coffee and FaceTimed Maddie while Gal played on the floor. We had nap time and then we all went back to the beach. I was able to avoid any crying from Gal by getting her in the baby carrier right away. We had a great time until Pal fell in the water and was “soaking wet” as he repeatedly said. We went back to the house for a warm bath for all and then had dinner which was the leftovers we had from previous nights. Played some more in the side yard and watched a show then off to bed.

Day 4 – Travel Day. We got up and ate breakfast then loaded the car. This travel day was so smooth! We didn’t even stop once. Gal slept the whole time and the boys were happy to watch a show and munch on snacks.

Things we learned!

1. Don’t go in August! Like I mentioned it was so busy and I wish we had just waited and gone in September. We could have avoided a lot of crowds and probably gotten a cheaper rate in our Airbnb.

2. Bring warmer clothing! Last year when we went it was during a heat wave so when packing this year I was very focused on that. I only packed one pair of pants for the boys and really light jackets. Thankfully our Airbnb had a washer and dryer but that meant I was constantly washing their clothing so they would have something warm to wear to the beach. So pack more cold weather clothing even if it is August!

3. Pre-Order Groceries. We brought a cooler with a few essentials with us (milk, coffee, yogurt) and a bag of dry foods (cereal, grab old bars, pouches, chips). I wish we had planned a grocery pick up for our first day so we could have avoided the grocery store situation on day 2.

4. Don’t forget medications! I left my thyroid medication at home and didn’t realize it until the next day. I got really tired the following days. So double check on the important things!

5. Next Anniversary Trip Will Be Solo. For this being an anniversary trip my husband and I didn’t spend that much time together. We divided and conquered most days. It was a nice family trip but just not too much time the two of us. Our 10 year anniversary will just be the two of us!

6. Nap Time Travel! This was our first trip traveling during nap time and it made for a great car ride. I also ran the boys hard before we got in the car.

7. Get a Special Toy. This was the second year that I bought a special sand toy for the trip! Last year I got these construction trucks. This year I got matching garbage trucks for the boys. They loved it!

8. Not something we learned but should be noted. It’s very hard to remember to take pictures with 3 children!

Emily Summer Bucket List: Petersen Rock Garden

Emily here! I’ve done the first item on my summer bucket list. We visited the newly opened Petersen Rock Garden.

We had planned to go early and leave the house at 10. We were behind by about 20 min but whatevs. Our goal was just to get there early. The drive there was easy! We saw a box for ticket admission which I didn’t see on the website. It was $10 per person which honestly felt a bit steep but the place is still a bit run down so I get what they are doing there. Thankfully my husband always has cash so we were able to pay our admission (which was very much an honor system kind of thing). We walked around the grounds and looked at everything. There were peacocks roaming the grounds. The boys loved seeing and hearing them and the peacocks didn’t mind our presence. Bud loved touching every rock and Pal liked all the mini houses. He kept asking me to take his picture in front of them. The path ways made us a littler nervous with Bud walking (he’s only 18 months) and there were some water features that we had to keep a very close eye on the boys. But overall very friendly for children.

We were there for about 30 min. Pal and I could have walked around for much long but Bud and my husband were ready to get out of the heat (it was already 80 degrees) and very sunny. I was also getting worried about baby girl overheating while I was wearing her. I brought snacks for everyone to have in the car. This also came in handy when Pal refused to get into the car and started mimicking the sound of the peacocks very loudly (which was pretty embarrassing).

When I asked my husband what he thought he said “it was okay. A littler weird.” But he said he had a good time. I really enjoyed it! I love miniatures though. We then planned to get some cookies from Crumbl in Bend. We drove there and baby girl started having a meltdown. Which come to find out she had a blowout so I got to clean that up in a parking lot and then she needed to eat so we had to sit in the car to do that. We were creepy closer and closer to the boys nap time and it really showed. They didn’t want to sit in the car anymore. But thankfully my mom had given us a box of chips the day before and it was still in the car so both boys got chips while I fed baby girl and my husband fed me bits of the cookies (felt like a nursing goddess). Then to keep everyone quite for the ride hope I sat in the back which looking back I should have done from the start.

Total Cost $45. $20 for Garden Admission. $25 for Crumbl cookies.

OR Summer Bucket List Final Post: Take A Trip

Emily here! This was by far the biggest item on my summer bucket list and I did it! I’m very proud of myself. My family and I went to the coast for 3 nights. This was the first over night trip we have ever taken with our children so it felt like a very daunting task.

Day 1 – Travel Day. We took our time getting to the coast so it took us about 5 hours to get there. The first half everyone was happy. The second half Bud was done being in the car but we made it. We arrived before check in to our Airbnb so we went right to the beach. It was hot hot hot there. About 90•F. But it felt like a dream to finally arrive after talking about it for so long. Then we check into our very hot Airbnb and unpacked. We loaded everyone up again and got a few groceries for the next few days. We planned to do breakfast and lunch at home. We got take out from Pacific Kitchen at Nye Beach. We got a crab cake appetizer, hot dog for Pal, fried prawns and fries for me, and seafood mac and cheese for my husband. Then we tired for a few hours to get the boys to bed and finally found an arrangement that worked well (Pal and Husband in the Master, Me and Bud in the living room.)

Day 2 – We had breakfast at home (eggs, toaster waffles, and bananas) as well as some pretty terrible coffee. But we needed it as we didn’t sleep the best. After breakfast we loaded the car up with beach essentials. We spent the morning at the beach (3 hours) and it was glorious! We came back for lunch (frozen pizza for adults, dinner leftovers for Pal) then had nap time for everyone. After nap time we went to Yaquina Head Lighthouse. We walked to the lighthouse and intended to come back to the interpretative center the next day but it never happened. We then drove around a bit because Bud had fallen asleep. We went to check out the historic bay front and quickly decided we didn’t want to go. Back to the house for take out dinner from Pacific Kitchen again (lol). Seafood Mac and cheese for both me and my husband and split a shrimp melt. Mac and Cheese at home for Pal.

Day 3 – Same breakfast as yesterday and then to the beach! After the beach we had lunch (cheese and turkey for Pal. Hot Pockets for me and husband.) Then nap time for the boys. And my husband and I got to hang out together and chat while they napped. Although we wish we had napped. After nap time we hit the beach again. Then got dinner from Flashback Fountain and Grill. Burger for me and husband and grilled cheese for Pal.

Day 4 – Travel home! We got up and loaded the car right away (which still took about 1.5 hours). Picked up breakfast at McDonald’s and hit the road! We made it home around 1ish. Got one more take out meal for dinner and just relaxed and unpacked until bedtime.

Travel Tips: 1. Prep and Pack Early. I started packing a week before we left. And we didn’t forget anything!
2. Someone sit in the back seat during the car ride. We didn’t do this right away on the way down and man. We had a rough hour or so when Bud woke up from his nap. After I sat in the back it went much smoother.
3. Eat one meal out. Save that sweet money and it’s easier especially with hungry children.
4. Don’t plan too much. Leave some room for everyone to rest and relax.
5. Final tip is to just take the trip!! Maybe your children will cry for an hour and a half on the car ride there and back. Maybe you will be up until 11 trying to get them to sleep. And maybe you’ll get to just focus on your family without the burdens of your normal to dos at home. Not every moment will be perfect but it’s so worth it!

The time has ended for my summer bucket list. There were two items that I never completed: Attend Library Story Time and Make the Perfect Afternoon Drink. Library Story Time was missed on purpose. Every time I thought about going it sounded not fun at all. I take Pal and Bud to the library pretty regularly and there always seems to be some little child in Buds face and Pal really likes to do his own things. So putting us in an enclosed room with more children and asking Pal to sit still just didn’t sounds fun at all. For my other bucket list item I honestly forgot about it. The drink I had wanted to make was a lavender lemonade and somehow add some caffeine to it but it never happened. There’s always next year!

Travelogue: Two Days in London

Maddie here! The hubz and I recently got back from a trip to the UK for my best friend (other than Emily duh!)’s wedding. It was all around an incredible trip and her wedding was a dream! While the wedding events mostly took place in the countryside, we had two days in London for sightseeing which I thought would be fun to recap here.

Lodging: We spent three nights at this cute airbnb which was centrally located in London. It ended up being $200 per night, which we thought was a great price for the flat. The bed was comfortable and it had a fridge to store our favorite UK eclairs, fruit juices, and ciders which we promptly stocked up on upon arrival.

Day 1:
8:00am Grabbed some coffee and avo toast at Harris + Hoole.

I needed a big coffee this day!

8:30am Our luggage was lost, so after coffee we walked to H&M in Oxford Circus to get some shirts and underwear- what fun! In the pic below I’m wearing the outfit that my best friend got me for her bachelorette the day before. We landed 1.5 hours late into Heathrow and I literally sprinted to her bachelorette which included a beautiful Thames lunch river cruise and an afternoon at the spa! While the outfit is super cute, I learned a valuable lesson to always pack a change of clothes in your carry on! (especially if you are flying Aer Lingus…)

This jacket is about to make many more appearances in this post.

10:00am-2:00pm Donning our new H&M clothes, we walked around Central London and saw the sites! We stopped into Fortnum & Mason to look at their fun Platinum Jubilee decorations and picked up a loose leaf tea infuser as a souvenir. We tried to get a peak of Buckingham Palace but it was all closed off in preparation for the Platinum Jubilee. We also walked through Soho and Borough Market where I had a few cheese samples…yum. After Borough Market, we ate lunch at a pub along the river: The Old Thameside Inn.

2:00-3:30pm Next up, we said a quick hello to my old work stomping grounds at Shakespeare’s Globe and enjoyed wandering around the Tate Modern for some culture. Gotta love those free London museums!

3:30-7:00pm We made our way to Hummingbird Bakery in Notting Hill- my fav! They were about to close and out of red velvet cupcakes by the time we arrived so I ended up getting a slice of red velvet cake instead. Hubz’s favorite black bottom cupcake is shown below. We then made a trip to our old neighborhood in Shepherd’s Bush where we lived in London 8 years ago to see how it changed. The neighborhood was much trendier, but our flat looked pretty much the same! We had dinner at one of the nicer pubs that we couldn’t afford when we were broke grad students which was tasty and fun. After that we made our way back to our airbnb and watched a program on the BBC about the Queen- v British.

Day 2:

7:30am-12:00pm We grabbed coffee and some pastries at Attendant Coffee Roasters and then spent the morning wandering around Regent’s Park in London. We enjoyed Queen Mary’s rose garden the best! We also enjoyed walking around the lake and even saw a swan.

12:30-2:30pm Since arriving in London in between all of our glam sightseeing, we had been waiting to hear when our bags would be delivered. We finally got the notification that they would be delivered between 12:30-1:30pm- YAY. I was able to rebook an afternoon tea that we had planned to be an hour later and everything would work out perfectly- or so we thought… We grabbed sandwiches at the Pret across the street from our flat and watched for two hours before the bags arrived! We missed our afternoon tea booking and couldn’t find anywhere to rebook in such short notice. So our afternoon tea ended up being an earl grey from Pret and a chocolate bar, but we were very glad to finally have our bags back.

We were so hopeful here.. little did we know we would be in the same spot 2 hours later…

2:30-9:00pm After getting our luggage back, we chilled for a bit and then grabbed an early dinner at Arcade Food Hall. We were able to try a bunch of different cuisines from around the world which was amazing and something we wouldn’t have been able to do if we went to afternoon tea. Then it was time for our big event: the Punchdrunk production of The Burnt City! I have been following this theater company since we first saw them in London in 2014 and was very excited when I realized that we would be in town for this production. The Burnt City is an immersive experience where you are encouraged to find your own way and experience, so the hubz and I split up, but we did we see each other on our way to the bar mid way through (lol) and it was fun to catch up on the tube ride home (on the brand new Elizabeth line!) about our individual experiences and feelings about the production.

Overall, we had a great time in London visiting some of our old favorite spots and trying a few new ones. I’m not sure when we will be back to the city, but until then we have great memories from this trip to look back on! The next day we headed to the beautiful countryside for three incredible days of wedding activities. Below are two bonus wedding pics- cheers!

26 Hours in Philadelphia

This past July my husband Alex and I took a quick but jam-packed trip to Philadelphia. Here is a recap of what we did, how much it cost, and what we would do differently in the future!

Lodging: For our hotel, we wanted to be in the city-center and knowing that this would cost us more money then we wanted to spend, we decided to try out hotwire.com. Yes, that H-O-T-W-I-R-E, hotwire.com of the jingle from the early 00’s. You go onto their website, pick a city, and it shows you the discounted rates of hotels along with the ratings without revealing the hotel name. We booked it and received Club Quarters Hotel right where we wanted to be in the city center. The cost was $115 for the night. Without discounts the usual cost for the room with fees is $150/night so I feel good about the savings. Cost: $115

12:00pm Arrived in Philadelphia– We parked our car in the hotel parking lot. Cost: $29

1:00pm Reading Terminal Market We walked to the famous Reading Terminal Market. It was super busy when we arrived, peak-lunch hour. After walking around the entire market, we decided to try a roast pork sandwich at DiNic’s. We had read that these were supposed to be the best roast pork sandwiches in the area (and voted best sandwich in America by travel channel) but we found them to be kind of bland… Next time we would definitely check out some of the traditional Amish restaurants. We grabbed some pastries (a canoli for me, an eclair for Alex) from Termini Brother’s Bakery and headed over to Love Park. Cost: $30

2:00pm Photo Op! We got our picture taken at the world famous Love status, a symbol for the city of brotherly love. It was not too busy when we went mid-day on a Friday. There was another family there that we took their photo and swapped so they took ours. Free

3:00pm Check-In We checked into our hotel and freshened up. Afterwards, we headed over to a bar nearby for a couple of drinks. Cost: $30

4:00pm Liberty Bell We walked down from our hotel area in Rittenhouse Square to the Old City area where everything is historic and awesome! We really wanted to go to Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were both signed) but failed at booking the timed tickets in advance and they had sold out for the day by the time we got there. We were out of luck for this trip but will definitely make it a priority next time! After that, we got in line to see the Liberty Bell. We waited in line for around 15 minutes before going in to watch an educational video on the symbolism and history of the bell and to see the bell itself. The bell was surprisingly close and there were not too many people crowding it so it made for a very cool experience. Free

4:45pm Paddys Pub Alex is a huge fan of the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia so we had to visit the real-life pub that the show is based on: Paddy’s Pub. We walked to the pub (which is actually located in a very nice part of town) and when we got inside we could DEFINITELY see how the pub influenced the show. It was locals only, the place reeked of smoke, and everyone was drinking beer from the bottle. We followed suit and eavesdropped on some of the locals’ conversations while we enjoyed our bottled Coors Lights. It was a success. Cost: $8

6:00pm Dinner For dinner we went to 2nd Story Brewing Co because we love to check out the local beers wherever we go. The food was pretty good (tip: if you get a salad ask for dressing on the side) and we enjoyed tasting the local brews! Cost: $70

7:30pm Walking Ghost Tour Cannot recommend this enough! We booked the tour through Free Tours By Foot and it was a definite highlight. The tour group met at Betsy Ross’s house and out from an uber bounded our fabulous guide, Toni. Toni led us through the historic streets of Philadelphia telling tales of ghosts from the American Revolution who haunt the houses, parks, and cemeteries with lots of suspense. The tour is technically free (pay what you will) but we tipped Toni $20 each for the 2 hour tour. Cost: $40

10:00pm We walked back to our hotel and called it a night.

7:00am We woke up early after not sleeping so great on the Club Quarters beds. The location was convenient but the accommodations were so-so. We had read that Federal Donuts were the thing to get in Philadelphia, so we walked to the shop which was a couple of blocks from our hotel. We tried six donuts, all of which we found to be way too sweet and a few too tart. It was the sugar smack we did not want or need. West Coast Donuts > East Coast Donuts Cost: $22

8:00am We walked around a bit in Rittenhouse Square. A Farmer’s Market was getting set up which seemed cool if we had arrived a little bit later in the morning! Free

9:00am Rocky Re-Creation One of the items on Alex’s bucket list items for the trip was to run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art like Rocky. We hopped in the car and drove over to the museum and found parking. We got in line for the Rocky statue photo-op and the people in line yelled at Alex to flex his muscles (like Rocky), which he did and it was a fun moment. Then, we went over to the infamous steps and Alex ran up the stairs and hopped in triumph! We walked up the stairs and grabbed a quick pic before heading back to the car. Free

10:00am Eastern State Penitentiary This was my favorite thing we did during the trip! As a ghost show lover, I was very familiar with the Eastern State Penitentiary as one of the most haunted places in America. The prison was operational from 1829-1971 and was the world’s first prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts aka a penitentiary. Guests wander through the prison led by an audio tour narrated by Steve Buscemi. There is an introductory part of the tour that leads you through the main prison with general history, but then you are free to explore and each cell tells a different story. Some highlights included Al Capone’s cell, the cell of a famous prison break, and the cell of a dog who was imprisoned. The tour also reflects thoughtfully on mass incarceration in the United States. The Eastern State Penitentiary is a must if you visit Philadelphia! Cost: $32

1:00pm John’s Roast Pork The last item on our list was to try a truly authentic Philly Cheesesteak! Alex had done a lot of research into this and while most tourists go to either Geno’s or Pat’s (these two restaurants have a rivalry as they are situated across from one another), we did some research into where the locals go and landed on John’s Roast Pork. It is a little bit off the beaten trail but when we got there it was packed so we knew we a made good decision. We waited in line for about 20 minutes before ordering and then waited another 10 minutes before our food was ready but when it came it was AMAZING! This was definitely one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. I still think about it sometimes and cannot wait to go back for another one. Cost: $30

2:00pm Our 26 hour trip in Philadelphia complete, we headed back to Jersey City and our cat, Emma.

The total cost for our trip was $406. At the time, we were not trying to be on an extreme budget so there are definitely areas that I would cut back on if we went back again. That said, we felt really good about our experience in Philadelphia and enjoyed our first trip to the fullest!
