Day in the Life 3 under 3.

I recorded a day in the life in my notes app a long time ago and I’m just getting around to posting it because that’s life with 3 children. This is a Day in the Life from when Gal was a newborn (6 weeks!!) and she’s almost one now! Here are my old day in the life’s 2 under 2 & just me and pal!

For context: This was in July 2023. Pal 3 year old, Bud 18 months old and Gal 6 week old.

5:45am Gal wakes me up. Go downstairs and feed her. She plays and stretches while I do a 30 min barre3 workout (I had to stop about every 10min to help Gal).

7:00am Put Gal in swing for nap. Made husbands food for work. Loaded dishwasher. Ate Breakfast. Iced coffee and Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sandwich (my go to newly postpartum).

7:30 Boys wake up. And I went to shower/get ready while my husband was with the children.

8am Got breakfast for the boys and took outside. They ate yogurt and a homemade breakfast cookie. We then went into the garage and I managed to tidy it while the boys played.

10:00am Gal woke up. Fed and diaper changed. Played and clipped everyone’s nails.

10:30am Snack time. Toast with turkey and cheese for me. Cliff bars for boys. Got everyone dressed. More diaper changes and loaded on the car.

11:00am Errands. Bank and fb marketplace pickup (got a different bath seat for Gal). Gal took a nap in the car.

11:45am Back home Bud down for nap. Fed baby while Pal played. Made lunch for me and Pal.

12:30am Nap time for Pal.

1:00 Me and Gal Nap (biggest tip for 3 under 3 or 2 under 2 is get those naps to sync so you can also nap!)

2:40pm dream feed Gal.

3:00pm Pal and Bud up from Naps. Watched a show and snuggled.

3:40pm Snack Time. Made chocolate banana smoothie (milk, banana, chocolate protein powder, spinach and peanut butter). Played upstairs with the boys.

5:00pm Gal wakes up (feed and diaper change for all). Dinner in the oven (mac and cheese from Costco).

6:00pm Eat dinner Outside (Mac and cheese and chicken nugget). Play more outside.

7:30pm ice cream dessert outside.

8:00pm Bath for Gal. Husband put Bud to bed. Feed Gal and put to bed “for the night”. Picked up bathroom. Folded 2 loads of laundry.

9:00pm Snuggled Pal before bed. Dishes. Husband put Pal to bed.

9:30pm Watch some TV with my husband.

10:30pm Bedtime.

1:00am feed Gal.

Emily’s Winter Capsule

Emily here! I loved Maddie’s capsule wardrobe post and I’ve been wanting to do my own. But I feel very overwhelmed trying to curate a certain amount of pants and tops. However last week I was watching a YouTube capsule wardrobe video and this woman picked one outfit to wear each day and then she repeated it every week. So you have a designated outfit that your wear Monday, Tuesday etc. I’m going to give it a shot! My goal is that every outfit is comfortable but still feels put together. I don’t want to have to change my outfit if I have to leave the house. Although I try to leave the house on specific days and these outfits reflect that. Here are my outfit ideas.

Monday. Usually my reset day. I picked a sweat set that is from Amazon with a white shirt.
Tuesday. Usually story time or a trip to the library. Picked an L.L Bean sweatshirt, white crew, and Maurice’s jeans.
Wednesday. Black popover with cardigan and black leggings.
Thursday. This day I reserve for any errands. Black long sleeve with a vest and stretchy Good American jeans.
Friday. Crew neck sweater with white undershirt and black jeans.
Saturday. Fav sweater (the only maternity item I kept!), black crew neck and black leggings.
Sunday. Similar to Saturday. Just a different sweatshirt.

I’ll update in one week with thoughts and any changes that are needed!

3. Hello, Molly! by Molly Shannon– Emily and I were huge Superstar fans growing up and this book made me love her even more! Molly Shannon has an incredible life story and and incredible outlook on life.

Emily’s Picks:
1. The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork. A retelling of The Nutcracker. A perfect Christmas read! Cozy atmospheric vibes and fun action.

Maddie’s Picks:
1. Protein Baked Oats– These have been my meal prep on repeat since having Wiggler
2. Chicken Bacon Ranch Casserole– When you need something just plain tasty!
3. Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Peppers– Low Carb and delish

2. Spicy Pork Dan Dan Noodles -My Postpartum Doula made this while I was recovery after birth. It was amazing and I think about it weekly. Hello Fresh recipes are generally all very delicious.
3. Hulk Smoothies. Again no real recipe. Chocolate protein powder, frozen banana, peanut butter, milk, and spinach (to make it Hulk green). Add yogurt if you got it. These have been the unsung hero these past few months. The boys love them. They are easy to make and easy to clean up. Also a low mess meal since it’s all in a cup.

Top 3 Purchases of 2023
Maddie’s Picks:

Emily’s Picks:
1. The Five Minute Journal. I have kept a journal since I was in the 5th grade but recently I’ve lost motivation to write. I quickly allows me to record key moments while also practicing mindfulness.
2. H&M 3 Pack Slim Fit T-Shirts. I got these right after I had Gal and I have been wearing them ever since. They fit perfect and wash easy. Also not see through like most women’s T-shirts. I proceeded to buy 3 more packs. So I now have 9 of these.

3. Hook – I had never seen this before and don’t know what took me so long.

Autumn Equinox Celebration 2023

Emily here! Sharing how we celebrated the Autumn Equinox this year. Pal is getting bigger and so I wanted this celebration to have some meaning so I decided to make a bird theme. It seemed appropriate given that birds are migrating soon. We also have a lot of birds visit our backyard. I started with getting some books from the library about birds. I got 5 and these 3 have been our favorite.

I also stopped by Starbucks for get a pumpkin spice chai and cake pops. Mostly that was for me but the boys loved the cake! Then after nap time we made our craft! An egg carton bird feeder. There are a ton of different DIY bird feeder options but I went with this one as it was very low cost and seemed the least messy. I only had to by the birdseed which was $6.

I made sure to show Pal and Bud a picture of a finished feeder so they got the concept of what we were doing. Bud didn’t care but Pal was jazzed. Pal loved stringing the beads on and they both loved adding the birdseed. Which we did outside to avoid any indoor messes. This craft was a pretty low mess low prep craft which is always nice. Bud is still young so he wasn’t totally interested in the craft and mostly observed as I made his but still fun to include him! Also Gal was having a moment during this whole craft so I ended up having to wear her. The whole thing felt a bit chaotic but we did it. We spent the rest of the afternoon outside talking to the various birds we saw and letting them know we had some food for them. We haven’t seen any eat the food but we’ve been checking on it the last few days which is a fun additional activity.

Happy Autumn Equinox!! 🍁

Emily Summer Bucket List: Final Post

Well folks the Autumn Equinox is Friday which means my deadline for my summer bucket list is up. I’d love to try and do all the things I didn’t get to in these few days but the reality is I have a house full of sick people/children to take care of. So let’s see what I did accomplish!

Pool Day with All 3 Children

Visit Petersen Rock Garden

❌ Lake Day. This required a lot more coordination than I had energy for this summer.

❌ Host a BBQ at my house. Tired to schedule this a few different times and it got cancelled for various reasons.

❌ Learn how to use the grill. I tired a few different times to get lessons from my husband but I just didn’t stick. The grill is his things and I’m just gonna leave it that way.

❌✅Go to a Winery for my Birthday. Wasn’t a winery but did something special still!

Take a Trip!

Here are a few pictures of things that weren’t on the bucket list, garden accomplishment, and daily life.

Hacks Vol.1

Emily here! I’ve been compiling a list of hacks over the last few months. These are all over the place. Most of the save money and some are just good when you’re in a pinch!

Shopping

FB Marketplace. This is the only reason I have a Facebook! I started using marketplace to sell items but soon discovered the beauty of buying as well! I’ve gotten a number of baby items second hand (bouncer seat, play gym, Patagonia coat for baby girl, bath seat). I also bought a shelf for our house and a few Christmas presents! I was most proud of a “City Rug” that I purchased last Christmas for $20 that was selling for $70+ online.

Buy Nothing Groups. This is also on Facebook. You join a group that is specific to your town. I have given away a few items and I was able to get a crib through this group!

Poshmark for Clothing. I use Poshmark for both me and my children! I’ve saved a lot of money buying second hand clothing for my boys. I try to purchase multiple items from the same buyer to save money on shipping. This is easy to do with children’s clothing as people are usually selling a lot of children’s clothing at once. This year I got all their summer pjs and shorts on Poshmark. I hit the jackpot with Pal’s pjs and found someone who was selling 9 pj sets for $25. I was planning to buy these same pjs from Walmart and it would have been about $100 for 5 sets of these pjs. I needed some short for the summer since I just had a baby and my other shorts didn’t fit. I found a pair of Madewell jeans in a fit and size that I already owned and knew fit me. Then I cut them into shorts myself! The jeans cost $25 and I’ve been wearing them almost everyday this summer.

Thrift Books. I used this for all my book buying! They have a huge variety of books and the prices are great! I mostly use this for children’s books. Hot Tip: I check out book from the library first before I ever buy them. That give me an option to see if my children even like the story.

1 item many ways

Blanket for a Sled. Every time it snows we never seem to have a sled. Last Winter I used our outdoor blanket as sled. It has a slippery waterproof side that worked great on the snow! It’s an expensive blanket but is a great way to get multiple uses out of an item. We use this in the backyard all summer or when going to the park. Blanket

Baby Bath Tub as a Laundry Hamper. With more people comes more laundry. We were in need of a hamper for clean clothing and we weren’t using one of our baby baths this past fall because everyone had out grown it. Works great as a clean cloths hamper! Bathtub we own.

Changing Tables and Bassinets. I only have one actual changing table cover. Instead I use a king pillow case, an old swaddle blanket, or the receiving blanket from the hospital. I also used the same items as a “sheet” for a bassinet mattress.

Holidays

Reusing Decorations. I have been reusing the same “Happy Birthday” banners and streamers for about 5 years. When we have a birthday party the theme is always just birthday. This year I upgraded to a felt Happy Birthday Sign and Banner that has been used for 4 birthdays so far! You use the same decorations for Christmas and Halloween so why not for birthdays too!

Christmas Card Holder. I’m pretty proud of this one! Last Christmas I need a way to display my Christmas cards which are the highlight of Christmas for me. I used a tack and ribbon and hung it on the wall (high enough so the boys couldn’t grab it). I had mini clothes pins and attached the cards that way!

Emily Summer Bucket List: Petersen Rock Garden

Emily here! I’ve done the first item on my summer bucket list. We visited the newly opened Petersen Rock Garden.

We had planned to go early and leave the house at 10. We were behind by about 20 min but whatevs. Our goal was just to get there early. The drive there was easy! We saw a box for ticket admission which I didn’t see on the website. It was $10 per person which honestly felt a bit steep but the place is still a bit run down so I get what they are doing there. Thankfully my husband always has cash so we were able to pay our admission (which was very much an honor system kind of thing). We walked around the grounds and looked at everything. There were peacocks roaming the grounds. The boys loved seeing and hearing them and the peacocks didn’t mind our presence. Bud loved touching every rock and Pal liked all the mini houses. He kept asking me to take his picture in front of them. The path ways made us a littler nervous with Bud walking (he’s only 18 months) and there were some water features that we had to keep a very close eye on the boys. But overall very friendly for children.

We were there for about 30 min. Pal and I could have walked around for much long but Bud and my husband were ready to get out of the heat (it was already 80 degrees) and very sunny. I was also getting worried about baby girl overheating while I was wearing her. I brought snacks for everyone to have in the car. This also came in handy when Pal refused to get into the car and started mimicking the sound of the peacocks very loudly (which was pretty embarrassing).

When I asked my husband what he thought he said “it was okay. A littler weird.” But he said he had a good time. I really enjoyed it! I love miniatures though. We then planned to get some cookies from Crumbl in Bend. We drove there and baby girl started having a meltdown. Which come to find out she had a blowout so I got to clean that up in a parking lot and then she needed to eat so we had to sit in the car to do that. We were creepy closer and closer to the boys nap time and it really showed. They didn’t want to sit in the car anymore. But thankfully my mom had given us a box of chips the day before and it was still in the car so both boys got chips while I fed baby girl and my husband fed me bits of the cookies (felt like a nursing goddess). Then to keep everyone quite for the ride hope I sat in the back which looking back I should have done from the start.

Total Cost $45. $20 for Garden Admission. $25 for Crumbl cookies.

3rd Time Mom: What’s in My Hospital Bag.

Emily here! In the spirit of twinning and winning Maddie and I were pregnant at the same time! I welcomed our 3rd child (a little girl) at the end of May just a month after Maddie had her baby. Here is what a 3rd time mom packed for the hospital! For reference I had a scheduled c-section and stayed in the hospital for 2 days. Also didn’t pack my hospital bag until I was like 36 or 37 weeks pregnant. I can’t even remember.

Pjs. I packed one set of pjs (pants, top, and short robe). I used all these items at various points in my stay.

Going home outfit. I brought a pair of basic sweats and a long sleeve top. A going home outfit isn’t even necessary. My first birth I just wore pjs home and no one cared. You change back into pjs immediately upon arriving home anyway.

Nighttime nursing bra. I also used this as my milk came in fast since this is my third child. This particular bra I brought was for sleeping so not as ridged as a normal nursing bra.

Sock and underwear. I didn’t use either of these. Idk why I even brought underwear? But I figured I needed to be prepared?

Depends disposable underwear. Maddie had great success with bringing her own pads I figured I’d give it a try this time. I’ve always used the hospital issued mesh underwear but I’m very glad I brought my own this time. It was a much better experience. The mesh underwear can sometimes catch on my csection scare which just makes me want to throw up thinking about it. The depends didn’t catch at all!

Eye mask. This was a must! It allowed me to sleep whenever I needed to without being disturbed by light. (Husband also brought one for himself)

Swaddle and blanket. We brought 2 swaddleme swaddles to the hospital and used both. I can never figure out how to swaddle with a blanket so these are very helpful. Highly suggest two since one is bound to get pee or poo on it. Also brought a soft baby blanket to cuddle the baby with. Those hospital ones are like paper!

Toiletries. I keep these very basic. Toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, hair ties, deodorant, body wash, eye drops. The only things I didn’t use was the deodorant and body wash. I also didn’t feel like showering until I got home. All 3 of my births I have never showered in the hospital.

Baby clothing. I overpacked on this for sure. We only used one outfit for taking her home. I brought like 3 pjs, 4 onesies, socks, and a hair bow. Only used 1 pj to take her home in.

Nail file set for baby. My second birth Bud came out with super long nails and I didn’t bring anything and he was scratching himself and me the whole time we were in the hospital. So this time I brought our file kit. But ended up not using it for baby #3.

Nursing pillow and regular pillow. Ended up not using either. I found the nursing pillow was too hard to use after my csection (which is odd because I used it for my 2rd birth). Also didn’t use my regular pillow because my husband forgot it in the car and I didn’t want it enough to make him go get it (although I brought my own pillow for births 1 and 2 and very much enjoyed it).

Kindle and phone charger. Used the phone charger. Didn’t pick up my Kindle once while in the hospital.

Wedding ring. My ring fit for my whole pregnancy and I wore it to the hospital but my nurse suggested I take it off before my csection and I’m glad I did because I swelled up like a balloon (as one does). I wish I had just left it at home because I was sorta stressed out about it the whole time.

Birkenstocks. My feet were swollen going into the hospital and leaving. These were the only shoes to fit and my husband had to loosen the straps before we left because of the swell.

Quarters. Previous births my husband has brought quarters for the vending machines with us. He forgot them for this last birth but they come in handy when I get hungry at 2am and everything in the hospital is closed.

20 out of 37 items got used in my hospital bag. Also please note that I didn’t pack any makeup. I have never packed makeup for any of my births. If you’ve got time to put on make up after giving birth you need to be sleeping instead. I said what I said.

How We Celebrated Christmas 2022

Emily here again! (I’m on a roll with post and feeling inspired!) Sharing how we celebrated Christmas this year.

Christmas Eve day my husband went to the store and he picked up some frozen pizzas and corn dogs for dinner. Now this maybe seem kind of lame but it was so nice! I’ve mentioned it before but I spend many days cooking in the kitchen. I make pizza from scratch regularly and so for the holiday I wanted something easy. I also had a feeling we’d be up late being Santa’s little helpers so I didn’t want a big kitchen clean up that night.

We let the boys open a present on Christmas Eve morning. Both me and my husband love letting them open presents early and new toys keep them busy for a while. After naptime we all watched the Polar Express for the first time. Pal and captivated the whole time and Bud was ever so snuggly bouncing between me and my husband to give equal snuggles.

We cooked off our simple dinner (corn dogs for the boys with a side of strawberries. Frozen pizza for me and my husband.)

After dinner Pal and I baked off some sugar cookies and decorated them for Santa. I used the recipe from the Better Homes and Garden Cookbook.

After the cookies we all sat at the dining table (even Bud!) and made a few cut out snowflakes.

Then it was off to bed for the boys! My husband and I got started on wrapping presents and building a dollhouse for the boys big gift. This was one of those moments where we really felt like parents. Creating the magic for our boys and spending our evening trying to figure out a “simple” dollhouse lol.

Biggest holiday tip: get your tree up high. I’m not spending all December telling little hands to not touch ornaments.

Christmas Day! Presents were opened in about 15 min but played with for the rest of the day. We ate scrambled eggs and doughnuts for breakfast. We had a relaxing day at home playing with toys and being together. I started dinner prep around 2. I’d like to note that next year I need a disposable pan for the ham. I have used this glaze recipe the last two years but it always ruins the pan I use. No matter how much foil I use. Also this year it somehow leaked out of the pan and made a huge mess in the oven and the house smelled burnt for days. But worth it because it’s delicious.

Dinner Menu: Homemade dinner rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, and ham.

Top 3 for 2022

Emily and Maddie here for a joint blog post. We wanted to wrap up the year with some of our fav things from 2022!

Top 3 Books of 2022

Emily’s Picks:
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. This book no joke changed my life. I couldn’t read another book for like 3 months after. I still think about it everyday. It was inspiring, eye opening and heartbreaking. I didn’t see the ending coming and those are always the best books to me.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. The book was such a cozy delightful read. Perfect for October-December. I loved all the witchy talk of potion making and in a way felt like a very modern Circe.

I’ll Show Myself Out: Essays on Midlife and Motherhood by Jessi Klein. This was hilarious. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in like 2 days. Jessi nails so much of motherhood and made me laugh out loud and cry as well. She this book talks a bit more about the toddler phase so if you’re a mom with a baby I would say to wait until you have a toddler to really “get it”. But again so funny!

Honorable Mention: I couldn’t finish this post without mentioning Wintering By Katherine May. I read this book at the beginning of the year and I’m currently rereading it right now. (Maddie jumping in here to say SAME!)

Maddie’s Picks:
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. Wow this was such an amazing and profound read! The story was epic, exploring multiple generations, and what I loved most was how the author managed to show the perspectives of so many different kinds of people, even those who were not necessarily important to the story. The family in this book and all that they experience has stuck with me long after reading it.

Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. I listened to this on audiobook read by Anderson Cooper, which I highly recommend. The Vanderbilt history is in many ways the history of America and it was extremely eye opening to learn about the story of this iconic family. Would you believe it made me cry? This book is definitely unexpected in all the best ways.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Series by Sarah J. Mass. I love me a good fantasy series and have torn through 4 of the 5 books in 2022 (currently reading the 5th book as I write this in 2023). I was immediately drawn into the characters and storyline of this book about high faeries and humans and have not stopped reading it since!

Top 3 Recipes

Emily’s Picks:
Better Homes and Garden Cookbook. Okay this one feel like I’m cheating a little but I got this cookbook last Christmas and about halfway through the year started using it. Everything I have made from it turns out perfect and amazing. This is something everyone (and I mean everyone) should have in their kitchen.

Oatmeal Cookies (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Cookbook). My husband’s one and only cookbook is this adorable If You Give a Mouse A Cookie Cookbook. I started making a few cookies from it with Pal and discovered the most delicious Oatmeal Cookies recipe in it. I think the secret in the heavy cream. It’s also very easy to put together. (I assume the book is now so expensive since it’s out of print.)

Cottage Cheese Pancakes. Maddie sent me this recipe when she was going ham for cottage cheese this Christmas and this has been a hit with everyone in my family. It’s not common that I find a recipe that everyone will eat. Love that it is low in sugar and has great protein!

Maddie’s Picks:
Emily’s Pizza Recipe (Sister Hack) After visiting Emily in Oregon and getting an in person tutorial on how to make her famous dough, the hubz and I upgraded our home pizza accoutrements and have been making this almost weekly with delicious results.

Pasta Fagoli Soup (Taste of Home) Healthy, cheap, tasty: check, check, check! This is a simple but oh so yummy recipe that I found on Taste of Home in early 2022. Perfect for fall or winter nights.

Turkey Meatball Subs (Six Sister’s Stuff) This recipe is a light and perfect for game day! I also like how I can use the leftovers for spaghetti later in the week.

Top 3 Purchases

Emily’s Picks:
New Dining Table. This was the best purchase of the year. Our other dining table had fabric seats which were getting destroyed with children learning how to eat. It was also a hand-me-down which we have used for 5 years. We were ready to purchase something specific for our space and agreed that this table would be perfect. (Bonus we reused our old dining table as a play table for our children. My husband just shortened the legs.)

7 Pack of Black Leggings. I kept telling myself that I couldn’t wear black leggings everyday. Idk why I was so set on it. But once I let myself it was so freeing! I bought a pair for each day and they have really held up! I’m currently 5 months pregnant and still wearing them!

New Water Bottle. I had been using the same water bottle for many years and anytime it got knocked over it leaked no matter what (and it gets knocked over a lot). So I bought this new one and its been so nice!

Maddie’s Picks:
Hot Pop Microwave Popcorn Maker. I was influenced to buy this after seeing it in a Youtube video from See Mindy Mom. I love that it is so easy to use and we can control all of the ingredients in our popcorn. We use it weekly for movie night.

Dining Room Rug from Wayfair. We bought this to replace our old dining room rug and I got the 8×10 size on sale for $164. It’s an indoor/outdoor rug, so very durable and the subtle pattern adds a little something to the room without being distracting.

Ever Go Blazer from Maurices. I bought three of these blazers in different colors for my new job that I started in April and I wear them all the time. They are so easy to dress up or down! My favorite way to wear them is with a v-neck tee, jeans, and loafers.
