Emily’s Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Emily here sharing my spring capsule wardrobe. I so enjoyed my winter capsule wardrobe. It made getting ready for the day so easy and it helped me feel more confident in my body because everything I wore each week fit and looked great on me! In my winter capsule I picked specific outfits to wear each day of the week. After a few weeks I ended up mixing and matching different pieces from the outfits I had selected. This time around I went for more of a classic capsule. I started by selecting pieces that were comfortable, fit well, and that were a bit lighter weight to accommodate the warm temps. Then I looked on my Pinterest to fill in any holes. Here is what I have come up with.

Sweaters.

5 sweaters. I kept the grey pull over and brown cardigan from my winter capsule. I added a stripe sweater my mom gave me. I also bought a grey sweatshirt and a black cropped cardigan.

Long Shirts.

I kept the black long sleeve from the winter capsule. Added a white long sleeve and a denim button down. I bought the black and white stripe long sleeve.

T- Shirts.

I kept the black and white T-shirt and purchased a black and white stripe shirt. And a word on all the stripes. After I had my first child I had gained weight (as one does). And I told myself “now that you’re bigger you can’t wear horizontal stripes!” Which I wore so much before having children. But I’ve always been told that horizontal stripes make you look bigger and larger so I said I couldn’t wear it anymore. Which is just silly! When I was looking at the capsules I had pinned all of them had stripe shirts. And I just finally gave myself permission to throw that “rule” out the window and wear what feels like “me” and what makes me feel good. So that’s why I have two stripe shirts in the capsule.

Pants.

I kept the madewell jeans, the leggings and the black jeans. I want some kind of shorts or sporty skort but I’d spent a lot of money already on the shirts and sweaters and it’s never hot enough in the spring to consistently wear shorts so I stuck with the pants. I may add some short overalls near the end of spring.

Next I’ll be sharing my spring capsule in action.

Emily’s Winter Capsule – In Action

First week with my new capsule! I started on Tuesday and here are my thoughts. Also I’m just taking these picture when I can and I have a messy house and at least one child with me at all times.

Tuesday. L.L Bean Sweatshirt with a white crew neck and Maurice’s Jeans. I took the children to the library in the morning and this worked great! And it was comfortable enough to wear all day. I also felt very confident in this outfit. Oh and it was 5 degrees outside.
Wednesday. Black popover, brown cardigan, and black leggings. I ended up adding a black tank top under the shirt for a bit more overage. Another comfortable outfit and I loved the elevated feeling of the popover.
Thursday. Black top, vest, and jeans. This was good too. The jeans kind of kept slipping down but they weren’t uncomfortable so that’s good!
Friday. Sweater, white crew neck and black jeans. I made it until 10am in the jeans and then changed into black leggings. The jeans were tight and uncomfortable. I think I will try another pair of Madewell jeans that are a bit more comfortable.
Saturday. Gray sweater with black crew neck and black leggings. This is one of my favorite outfits to wear. I always get compliments on this sweater. And it’s v comfortable!
Sunday. Sweatshirt, black T-shirt, and black leggings. This was a great easy outfit. Especially for Winter where we don’t do much on Sundays.
Monday. Matching green sweat set with white shirt. I’m pretty sure my shirt is backwards. And I still feel like I’m in PJs which is both a pro and a con.

Overall thoughts: I loved this! Getting dressed was so easy and I felt pretty put together most days. I’m going to make a few swaps going forward. Friday’s outfit I’m going to do a black crew neck and different jeans. I picked my second most comfortable madewell jeans. And Sunday I’m going to switch the back crew neck for a white one. I’m not super sure on Monday’s outfit. But I’m going to give it another week and see. I won’t do another week post since it’s going to look exactly the same lol. But I plan to do a new capsule for Spring. Possibly at the end of March as it can still be pretty cold up until then and even into April.

Emily’s Winter Capsule

Emily here! I loved Maddie’s capsule wardrobe post and I’ve been wanting to do my own. But I feel very overwhelmed trying to curate a certain amount of pants and tops. However last week I was watching a YouTube capsule wardrobe video and this woman picked one outfit to wear each day and then she repeated it every week. So you have a designated outfit that your wear Monday, Tuesday etc. I’m going to give it a shot! My goal is that every outfit is comfortable but still feels put together. I don’t want to have to change my outfit if I have to leave the house. Although I try to leave the house on specific days and these outfits reflect that. Here are my outfit ideas.

Monday. Usually my reset day. I picked a sweat set that is from Amazon with a white shirt.
Tuesday. Usually story time or a trip to the library. Picked an L.L Bean sweatshirt, white crew, and Maurice’s jeans.
Wednesday. Black popover with cardigan and black leggings.
Thursday. This day I reserve for any errands. Black long sleeve with a vest and stretchy Good American jeans.
Friday. Crew neck sweater with white undershirt and black jeans.
Saturday. Fav sweater (the only maternity item I kept!), black crew neck and black leggings.
Sunday. Similar to Saturday. Just a different sweatshirt.

I’ll update in one week with thoughts and any changes that are needed!

Month of Outfits

Maddie here with an entire month of outfits! This is to commemorate the finishing my first month at a new job that I am v excited about. I made the move from working in HR at a nonprofit theater to working in HR at a global consulting firm. Emily helped me go through my existing clothes (some being formal from the law firm and others being more casual from the theater) and helped me pick out new pieces for my wardrobe based on the new “smart casual” dress code of the office. Hopefully we will do a joint blog post later about that process which was really fun. Overall, I feel great about my new workwear vibe- I am able to express my style but still feel professional!

Week of Outfits

Emily here! I had my second baby this January. I have found it hard to dress my new mom body so I thought it would be a good exercise to take pictures of my outfits each day of the week. I saw this tip on Pinterest. It’s a way to see how things look on you and help curate a wardrobe that works for you. Here we go!

As a reminder I am home full time with my kids. We spend a lot of time outside and playing on the floor. I am also nursing my newborn. So comfort is key. I literally bought a 7 pack of black leggings from Amazon because that is what I wear most of the time. I’m just owning it! But I still want to feel semi put together. I think I look “best” in Thursday’s outfits. I actually left the house for a play date so I put on jeans. But wearing jeans everyday is rough. They dig into my belly and kind of put me in a bad mood. But my most comfortable outfit where I felt pretty put together was Friday. I got this sweatshirt from Amazon that I’m really happy with! I got it in two colors and might get the tank top version for summer. Also I never wear shoes in the house lol. But I usually pair things with my Birkenstocks or white Nike tennis shoes.

the Holiday Capsule Wardrobe – Amanda

Emily here! The holiday season is upon us and so is the season to watch the Holiday. Me and Maddie love this movie so much. When ever I watch this movie I am so envious of both Amanda and Iris’s wardrobe. I was inspired this year to come up with a capsule wardrobe for each character. Amanda as a character has many looks. She has great lounge wear, everyday wear, and formal wear. For this collection I wanted to focus on everyday wear but couldn’t resist adding in a festive dress.

Blue Sweater / White Turtle Neck / Pink Cardigan
Wrap Coat / Black Jeans / Black Party Dress
Beige Scarf / Black Flats / White Hat / Gold Necklace

My goal was to make this a semi affordable capsule. Amanda can obviously afford very expensive clothing and it really showed when I was looking for the right clothing for this. Almost all her sweaters are cashmere. And her dresses? Talk about expensive. I think I found a happy medium with these pieces. The wrap coat, dress, and shoes are splurge purchases for sure. But will also be classics for years to come. I also went with flats for the shoe choice even though Amanda is almost always wear heels because who realistically wears heels all the time? Not me. Stay tuned for Iris’s capsule next!

Outfits Week of 3/1

Here’s a little outfit check-in! I am now doing a hybrid work from home/going into the office which has been nice. I went in on Monday and Thursday this week. I am still loving the pants that I got from White House Black Market in the fall. They definitely get more comfortable with time! One thing I learned in taking these pics is that the sweater I wore on Wednesday is see through- guess I will NOT be wearing that one in the office again. Nothing too exciting here except on Thursday you will note that I have a…MIDDLE PART…you gotta move with the times and Gen Z is telling us what’s up. I have been really enjoying the symmetry of the middle part and I am planning to get a hair cut with some layering in the middle. I was never a fan of skinny jeans so I am fine to say sayonara to those as well. But why are all the new straight leg jeans ankle jeans? I need something full length. Pls send any full length straight leg jean suggestions my way.

Outfits Week of 10/26

I bought some new clothing for fall! Mondays outfit was all new and all from Old Navy (except the booties). I also bought two sweaters from Maurices. I wore one of them for Thursday’s outfit. The other sweater I bought from them already has some holes in the front. I think it’s from rubbing on my counters when I am doing dishes. I am still learning how to dress my post baby body but I am starting to lose some weight which is giving me some more pant options. Woo! My favorite outfit from this week was Tuesdays. It was comfortable and I think it looked really slimming due to the monochromatic navy.

I also bought some new clothing for fall! I was hoping that I would be back in the office so I picked up a few “back to school” items from White House Black Market (boot cut jeans and high rise coated black skinny jeans), Target (ankle boots, kimono sweater), and Old Navy (blazer, utility jacket, striped tee, black/navy crew neck cardigans). This was my biggest online shopping trip yet and it was a huge success! I surveyed my closet, made a list of the items that I felt were ‘missing’ from my fall wardrobe, located the items online, and stalked the sales until I was comfortable with the price. I spent $237 for all of the items linked above- if the pants had been regular price it would have been $200 for those alone so I feel v good about the haul. I had never been comfortable online shopping pre-COVID, but I may stick with this method of shopping. It was much easier than going to the store, seeing if there was anything cute, and them inevitably not having my size in stock. And a bonus Old Navy and Black Market have options to purchase tall sizing. It also helps that now we are in the house delivery items do not get stolen like they did at our apartment. As a disclaimer, while I started off wearing these outfits since I am still working from home I shed layers throughout the day to be more comfortable. My favorite outfit was on Tuesday, I am loving the utility jacket and wear it constantly. I also love coated black skinny jeans- you can’t tell in the picture but they have a bit of sheen to them which makes them dressier than regular black jeans.

Outfits Week of 9/7

We are back with some outfit pictures! Since having my baby I have found it very hard to dress my new body. I am exclusively breastfeeding so I’ve retained some weight from my pregnancy. I was initially wearing really big flowing tops and I finally realized that that was making me look bigger instead of smaller. It can be hard to wear more form fitting clothing items but it actually makes you look smaller rather than bigger. I mostly wear comfortable clothing because I am up and down on the floor lifting a baby all day so I don’t like to feel restricted.

I have been working from home which has led to a much more casual style. Sometimes I head into the office to do in person tasks like on Tuesday so I threw on some flats for that. Dressing down was fun at first but I can’t wait until we are back in the office and I can get back to my normal style. Also gotta love my old lady slippers on my Friday lewk!
