January Book Picks

Emily’s Book Pick
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This book honestly took me two months to read. It felt a bit slow going and I finally was able to finish it by listening to the audio book. I wanted to read it because I hoped it would be similar to Circe. It for sure had the God and Goddess aspect but it just wasn’t as exciting as I hoped it would be. But I did enjoy the cultural aspect of it. Also hot tip: I have been looking on The Book of the Month Club’s website for my latest book picks and that’s how I came across this book. Then I just check it out from the library!

Maddie’s Book Pick
Braving the Wilderness by Brené Brown

OMG I loved this book so much I think about it all the time! It is all about being your authentic self and making peace with the discomfort of never 100% fitting in. Brené’s acronym for Braving (Boundaries, Reliability, Accountability, Vault, Integrity, Nonjudgement, and Generosity) which she applies to several kinds of situations and relations is something that I will often look at before I have to have difficult conversations at work to put me in a place of understanding and openness. I listened to this on audiobook which Brené narrates and definitely recommend it. It is a book that I will definitely come back to in the future. Also I want to share this quote because it is amazing and I also think about it all of the time:

There will be times when standing alone feels too hard, too scary, and we’ll doubt our ability to make our way through the uncertainty. Someone, somewhere, will say, ‘Don’t do it. You don’t have what it takes to survive the wilderness.’ This is when you reach deep into your wild heart and remind yourself, ‘I am the wilderness.
